Thousands of cats are killed or injured on our roads every year. Clearly the upset caused to families when this happens to a pet cat is very distressing. In many cases, owners will not even discover their loved pet's fate.
However, a recent Early Day Motion tabled by MPs David Crausby and Lindsay Hoyle aims to change this. It calls on all local authorities to routinely scan domestic cats killed on roads, thereby allowing owners of microchipped pets to be told of their cat’s death or injuries.
This EDM (no: 2079) is something Cats Protection fully supports – we microchip around 35,000 cats a year and our volunteers and staff play a big role in dealing with families naturally distraught over their missing cat or kitten.
We need your help to get this issue discussed further in Parliament and time is running out. We are acting now before the Queen’s speech sets out the parliamentary programme in November.
Please write to your MP today, even if your local authority routinely scans cats killed on roads. You can download a letter template to urge your MP to sign the EDM 2079 below. Please personalise and add your own comments to make it more effective. You can find out the name and contact email/postal address of your MP here.
